Parakeet Cages
The best options to find the right cage for your bird.
Parakeets are one of the best pet birds a person could ask for. They are easy to tame and they are very loving and affectionate creatures. Once you have chosen your pet parakeet it is time to choose a cage. There are many different options and it can be a little overwhelming. The best place to start is to figure out how often you are going to let your bird out of the cage. This is a great starting point because many birds have a really hard time living in small cages if you don’t let them out often. If you are going to let your bird out quite often then a small parakeet cage is just fine for your bird. If you will not be letting your bird out then it would be better if you got a bigger cage for the bird to spend most of its time in. I would also suggest the larger cage if you are planning on having multiple birds living in it as well. Another consideration is whether the bird will need to be kept safe from other pets or children. If this is the case, you need to make sure the bars are spaced very close together so a curious cat or child won’t be able to reach in and hurt the bird or possibly get bitten. Some cages also come with locking doors to keep the birds in or children out.
There are basically three materials to choose from when choosing parakeet bird cages. They are wood, plastic, and metal.
Wood-These cages have a classic look if you want a cage with a decorative flare. They are sturdy and the wood that they are made of is safe for the parakeet’s habitat. A problem that can happen with a wood parakeet cage is that it could get worn down if the parakeet bites and sharpens its beak using the bars. In the wild parakeets gnaw on tree branches to keep their beaks sharp. Another down side to a wooden cage is that it can be difficult to clean. Washing the cage with water breaks down the wood and can also cause mold. However, they do make a very beautiful cage.
Plastic- These cages tend to be the least expensive and are actually quite durable. Plastic parakeet cages are very light in weight and are cleaned very easily because of the plastic surface. Once again the bars on the cage can get worn because of the natural instinct that the parakeet has to sharpen its beak. Plastic can be dangerous for a parakeet’s health if swallowed, so make sure to keep the cage free of any small particles of plastic.
Metal- Metal cages are by far the most durable and most widely used parakeet cage material. Metal cages often have a plastic bottom that slides out for easy cleaning. The metal is often painted or has a plastic coating so you can choose from a variety of colors.
Overall, whichever type of material you choose, you will find a variety of styles and functionalities that will fit every parakeet and every budget.
